FAQs

What is CPLA / RCPLA?

CPLA / RCPLA  – CPLA is derived from PLA.  Crystallized Poly Latic Acid combines 70-80% PLA and 20-30% Chalk and biodegradable additives. The crystallization process to CPLA enables products to withstand temperatures to 85 degrees centigrade.  CPLA is matt white or by adding charcoal becomes  black and as such is used for coffee cup lids.  This does not affect the composting properties. CPLA is 100% biodegradable and compostable according to EN-13432 standard

What is PLA?

PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) naturally occurs from plant starch derived from renewable corn crops and  processed into bio-polymer material referred to as PLA.  Predominantly used in the manufacture of deli and salad containers, straws, cold drink cups and lids.  PLA is replacing the traditional fossil oil based products such as polythene used for internal cup linings. PLA degrades in a natural environment into biomass; CO2 and water.  PLA conforms to European compostability standard EN13432 and uses less non-renewable energy during production than more traditional oil based plastics and has much lower CO2 emissions. End of life options for PLA include composting.

What is Sugarcane Bagasse?

Sugarcane Bagasse is the natural waste fibres from the sugarcane plant, ideal for hot food takeaway packaging, bowls and plates. A non-food renewable resource, with annual harvests, Bagasse is the name given to the plant fibre that remains after sugar producers process the sugarcane stalk.  Bagasse is being used more and more to replace paper based goods in the food service industry and is ideal for hot or cold food stuffs and is microwave and refrigerator safe.  Certified compostable and biodegradable Sugarcane can biodegradable within 90 days, composting conditions will affect the time taken to biodegrade.
